What happens to lost baggage??

I considered that good fortune - even though I only had one change of planes. When I leave for Shenyang 2 weeks from today, I have 4 different flights. I am concerned that my baggage has a good chance of being lost. I will take precautions, such has bold labelling of where I am staying and having a carry-on pack... What are your experiences with lost baggage? Delta and Air China are the airlines...
