Yes, safe to travel as a solo female.

"Cheapest" depends on the amount of discount available for your travel date and flight required.

GUEST56152 Ellyse - I just found this forum and it looks like you're doing a great service for all of us planning train trips in China!

My question: does the T99 from Shanghai to Guangzhou run daily? I know the Hong Kong train is only every other day, but I haven't been able to figure out if that's also true for ending in Guangzhou.

Thanks a bunch!

I always thought that trains, especially the expresses, ran daily. I cannot find any reference to it not being daily and I cannot see why it would not run daily as there would always be a demand for it.

But as you said, Ellyse is the real expert, so I look forward to her comment :)

T99 runs daily to Guangzhou, and goes all the way through to Hong Kong on alternate days.

Beijing -- Shanghai by overnight train, Shanghai -- Guangzhou by budget flight on Spring Airlines (or, any other airlines would work well too).

The fastest trains between Shanghai and Guangzhou still take almost 16 hours.

Guangzhou -- Shanghai South:
K528 (0808--0410) 20h02min
K512 (0901--0538) 20h37min
T170 (1400--0856) 18h56min

Guangzhou East -- Shanghai:
T100 (1811--1000) 15h49min

Fare would depend on your choice of seat or sleeper, and type of bunk.
