We know of many features that differentiate between humans & animals - beside looks of cos.
One of the subtle differences however is that animals are contented with what they have, humans are not really so. Humans tend to look at what we do not have or possess. Rather we look towards what we would like to have. As a result we tend to be unhappy and discontented. And we envy - we envy what others have.
What do you think ?

Hmm Pinetree, good question. maybe what you are describing is modern humans, the world of today, the comemrcialised, advertised, must have world. In the older societies perhaps we were more content. Maybe we have traded contentment for possessions.

I am curious, how did you know animals were contented with what they have, please? What do animals fight for?

Hehehe, know this will come from you Verb.
Well, we don't really know. But have u seen them fighting over something that they don't have ? They only fight for their food, mates and boundaries.
On the other hand, maybe that's all they have to fight for.
So who was this that stated the above that I picked up from ? Made me look so silly. But it is not my fault, huh. Hahaha !!

So you think human beings fight for nobler things? I don't think so. Ultimately, they fight for those same stuff.

I thought of a quote:
A: 子非鱼,安知鱼之乐?
B: 子非我,安知我不知鱼之乐??

hahaha~~~ there were people in ancient China knew how happy fishes were, ... maybe you just can see how contented animals really are.

The major difference between human and animals is not whether they feel contented over their present situation - well, of course we don't really know if our four-legged friends are really contented or not; the major difference between us human beings and animals is that we seek for pleasure once our basic needs are contented. Well, it seems animals do things according to their instincts mostly if not only.

Many animals today, (especially dogs and cats) enjoy life far better than millions of unfortunate human beings. It matters where you were born. Sometimes I feel like living a dog's life. Not in Guangdong though..hehe

o, yes, I agree with Rita. What humans fight for? Ultimately mate, borders, food, etc.

The only difference is that humans like to use more legitimate and even noble excuses to hide our instinct.

One thing I did notice while travelling China was the smiles on the faces of the kids in the villages - who by my children's standards had very little. But no matter where I went the children were smiling - I think our children have so much in this modern society that they have forgotten how to appreciate the little things in life. Like the little boy in Biejing who was thrilled with the rubber band we gave him- because he was interested in it, and he played for ages with it on the footpath. I can't imagine my children being so happy at the sight of a rubber band!!

hi pinetree,
all the fights, envy, etc are the needs to survive. maybe, the whole life of a person has been endowed abilities which enable him or her to live on this planet, however none of us is perfect, so that we will realize to work hard and perfect the global village. survival of the fittest is applicable to both human beings and the animal world.
