It would pose a threat to its feud, France and Germany. These three powers compete against each other to play the leading role in Europe. Futhermore, US do not want to see any single country in Europe becoming powerful to defy his leadership in NATO.

As for competing with Germany and France there is no fued, we are not always happy that they don't want get involved in any conflics around the world, it seems to be left Britain and the US which is why we are their closest allies. I hope there will never be another world war.
