In reply to #10 - the answer is "with difficulty!". The best way will be to get your wife to open the business and employ you (but you need a university degree!). It is almost impossible for foreigners to open their own Chinese businesses here. You need a minimum of $5 million investment! Another option to look into, is to start a Hong Kong overseas company, and register a Guangzhou office. Good luck - you'll need it.

Hi,
I intend to backpack around China for a few weeks in July/August (yes I know this is prob the worst time to visit China!). To apply for the visa I need proof of accommodation for the entire time I'm there, what is the best way around this? I'm thinking of booking a few nights accomm in diff youth hostels and canceling them once I get the visa... is there a better way to get the visa?

Barwon: I have heard you can open a small restaurant for much less, 100,000 rmb. You pay a deposit which can be drawn on as capital. It seemed a bit strange to me but a Chinese friend was helping a foreigner do this. If anyone wants more details, msg me and I will seek further info.

No Retha, they are not banned but the rules and discretionary regulations are being applied more strictly and the visa duration is often shorter. If you can wait until after the Olymps it should be easier again.

Your Z visa is a single entry and you cannot vary that. If you try to get a double entry tourist visa it cancels your Z visa. So you must get the Z visa converted into a Residence Permit by your employer (which they must do within 30 days of your entry into China) then you have multiple entry.

GUESTKEX Hello,
I'm a foreign student in China, my girlfriend wants to stay there with me for long time ( around 3 - 4 months ).
Since she isn't going to study or work here, I think she is only eligible for visa L.
L Visa is only for a month, even If I extend it in China, I don't think it can be extended for 3 months.
Is there any way to make a long term visa for my girlfriend?

If she applies for an L visa so she can be with a person o another visa she might ge3 month or longer visa. She cou also apply for a multiple entry visa - she would have to exit the mainland after the period allowed and then re-enter.

Maybe the 1 month limit was imposed because of the Olympic restrictions, this is not a standard restiction (for most nationalities)

GUEST99183 Looks like will never end this visa problem, too much problem for business people.
only bcs no have visa i loosed my business. Why they created this kind of rule? Atleast must see our record had living here longtime and doing business and we bring money here give job to their people. Many factory became rich bcs of us. If this condition continue i will move my business to other country.
