You should have no trouble getting a multiple entry visa for China, but it does depend on your nationality.

Why does it matter when the original was issued? Ask the uni.

Getting a China visa, whether tourist or a multi entry year long, depends on your nationality and timing. If you have a Macau or Hong Kong working permit it is possible but it is getting more and more difficult. And it is more difficult for a tourist visa all of the time since many people (even Americans) are working in China on tourist visas. It is true that the Chinese giovernment has tightened regulations but the last post that 'doesn't want to be too commercial' is overstaing the problem. 95% of travellers, probably more, will have no difficulty getting the visa they require. A smalll number want to stay for long periods or work when they are not eligible to. They (maybe I should say 'we') are finding a little more difficult these days, and yes with their guanxi or connections these agencies can help, for a price. But most travellers can just go through the standard government procedures.
