| JCNILE, it was in the same mansion, where my uncle talked about how he made the decision to buy a geo-thermal heat generator for his manufacturing plant instead of living off the steam heating grid, and save tons of energy (and money) per year for the city. Ironically, his company pays for his lodging and he chose the mansion himself. In the context of being environmentally conscious, everyone on Earth has an equal responsibility. But because we are not equal, what frame of mind should we use to consider ourselves a 'doer'? Should we say with greater power comes greater responsibility? Or with greater power comes greater sacrifice? Responsibility means taking the leadership role in cutting massive usage, like public education or researching in better technology. Sacrifice means to give up the 'perks' of being a leader, for example, letting his family suffer in the winter cold. I think both are important. But I think if there ever is a priority, a person in power should consider taking responsibility first, then sacrifices. I think Gore did what he set out to do, perhaps being an individual he will never be made 'doer of the year' but that movie prompted and inspired even governments to take action. It might be any other political figure lending his face to the campaign, but it is still his campaign. Perhaps the standard in moral also has a perspective to it. Depending on how you see Gore, is it morally correct to use heating for a ranch in the south, or is it morally correct (from his perspective) to have his family compromise comfort, considering he is rich and influential. There are many other things to consider as well, image for example, contribution as a whole, another example. At the end of the day, I'll say that as long as we do our part, we are doing our responsibilities to our world. Whatever others do, we have no control, neither do we use that as a case to demote the work we have done. As a whole, questioning other's failure doesn't help in any way to contribute towards the grand plan. |
