According to a survey about May Day traveling, this year, 38.6% of the Chinese tourists will avoid the May Day holiday. They prefer traveling before or at the end of the holiday. 20.4% of them will take some not very hot cities, i.e. Guiyang, Xiamen, Beihai, etc. as their destinations.
Is this good news? But I think it will be still very crowded during the holiday.
My friends invited me to Qingdao to enjoy the seascape and, as she said to catch the crabs :-) Anybody here has been to Qingdao?

I would rather stay at home and walk around Xi'an city a little bit. All the trains are packed. I see long queues standing in front of the ticket booths. Even before the ATMs. I am scared.
However, even if stay at home and surf the internet, you will suffer a slowness, too. Alas!

You guys and gals in CN are lucky. In the UK we get one extra day. By the time you go somewhere it's already time to come back!! I'm envious
