is this itinerary acceptable for a visa free stopover?

Hi,
We are US citizens and plan to stop in Chengdu for a couple of days on our way back home from Thailand. We will be flying on a direct flight from Thailand into Chengdu and then on a direct flight from Chengdu back to the US. Since the US is our home country, is this still considered a third country to qualify for the 72 hour visa free stay in Chengdu? Thanks for your help!
