My wife and I are travelling to Beijing in August. We have previously visited china and stayed in a hotel, so the visa was not an issue. This time we are staying in an apartment. How easy is it to get a visa? Can we just put the address of the apartment or will this be a problem to get the visa? Would we have to register at a police station on arrival? We are from the UK.

The required documents or L type are an invitation letter or round-trip air tickets and hotel booking. If you don't have the invitaion letter, you should provide airtickets and hotel booking. I am not sure if your application will be approved if you stay in an apartment.
You know, the hotel usually help you finish the registration when you check in. If you stay in an apartment or a local's home, you surely need to register at local police station within 24 hours when you arrive.
