From Harbin it's a 4/6 hour train ride depending on the speed of the train but it's much cheaper than a coach at around 60RMB one way!

With no guide book we easily found a hotel across from Mud. station which ran mini-buses to the lake. Beware they'll drive around town for an hour or more if business is slow before they finally head off for another 3-4hours drive.

In the busy season try and book ahead or with an agent in ...

Take a Trip to Qiqihaer
KAIOTEE | Jul 25, 2007 00:37 GMT-5

My first time to China... I lived in Qiqihaer, Heilongjiang for about 5 months and at the time, I was continuously tossing up on whether I liked it or not, it was so different.

Now that I have left, I miss that place so much. Yes, it was rediculously cold and it was suicide trying to cross the road, but all in all... Its actually a really nice city, the people are great, the sights are amazing and the food is to die for.

If you're ever in Haerbin, just jump on a train and take a look around... they have night markets, amusements parks, ten pin bowling, tranquil landscapes and some decent clubs too... something for everyone I guess.

MADE IN CHINA
KAIOTEE | Jul 23, 2007 05:47 GMT-5

A lot of people underestimate what is actually available when travelling to another country, especially one being so different to their own.

Girls, despite what you get told, sanitary products ARE available although pads are the more common choice to locals over tampons.

Guys, same for you... deoderants (both roll on and spray), condoms, and razors are all available.

Now, from experiencing the North for the maority of my time in China, it gets REALLY cold. As DUNC said, legwarmers/thermals are a necessity. Now I'm not one to go prancing around in tights so it was nice to know that you're everyday pants just go over the top.

Apart from the obvious, beanies, gloves, scarves, ear muffs, etc, you really don't need to pack that much stuff. If you're only looking to spend money on travel, food and souveneirs, then by all means go on and stuff your suitcase... but i'll remind you, 1. 90% of the things you buy in your local convenience store were MADE IN CHINA, so yes you can buy it when you're in china, and most times for half the price you would've paid back home. and, 2. Remember, when you're leaving... you have to make sure you have room in your suitcase for the extra things you bought, otherwise they either make you pay extra for the excess weight, or they arrange your items to be sent to your home by air/sea mail at your expense. And yes, it happened in Shanghai to a girl in our group.

Hope this helps anyone planning their trip.
