I have to China very often - sometimes on my own, sometimes with tour groups. The times with tour groups, I find generally that the tour guides are very professional and know what they were talking about.
I have come to understand that to be a qualified tour guide, one has to sit for a stringent exam and apparently being a tour guide is a popular choice, so competition is dead keen.
Also there are 3 levels of guide - local, national & international.
How difficult is the tour guide exam ? What are the qualifications required to even try sitting for the exam ? Some tour guides speak/write excellent English and maybe other foreign languages as well. How do they learn these in the 1st place ?

English is one of the compulsory subjects from junor middle school(some as early as primary level, even some kindergartens in big cities pick the subject, which is now surefire qualification/method to get more recruits) to collage. According to the present rule, only the students who pass the CET4 have choice not to attend the English classs.
