![]() | Interesting! Me too, have found this article. Here is it. PS: Leonardo has offered the photo in his post. It's not always the case that the man is western. He might as well be a Chinese businessman What he is most likely to be, however, is rich. I find the whole thing weird, and a bit hard to understand. Sure, there are always exceptions. But still. So many (married….) western men come to China to work and end up getting themselves a pretty little thing that they wine, dine, buy stuff for and.. well, the rest I don't even want to know. What do they get out of each other? So many times have I stumbled across these couples at cafes and restaurants: The man; western, older. In a suit. Looking a bit, tense. The woman; young, pretty. Amazing body. Looking bored. Together: QUIET. They stir their cups of coffee looking for things to talk about. They pour yet another glass of wine (although the girl often doesn't drink so the man might be having a beer on his own) and still, they cannot find things to say. Then sometimes you see them at Chinese restaurants, and here the woman is the boss, ordering all the food (and yeah, we are talking a lot of food!) and chatting away with the waiters meanwhile the man is silently observing, trying to peal the chilli off his meat. Noooooo, I knoooow. Not every single mix couple is like this. There are loads and loads of happily in love mixed couples. Many of my Chinese friends date western guys. But I feel it is a bit different when the girl knows English/the guy knows Chinese or when they are at least around the same age (which are the case with my friends). Old man-young girl simply looks so… desperate. Although it’s not like it is ever going to change. The other day a friend from Sweden told me about a guy from her work: A man in his mid 40ies, still a virgin, being socially incompetent. He eventually got bored of being lonely and booked himself a fligt ticket to Thailand: "I'm gonna go to Thailand and bring home my wife" he said, and left. And he did. He came home with a pretty Thai girl who now sits in his flat, not knowing a word of Swedish, not having anything special to do. Who is the winner/loser? A Chinese (Shanghainese) girlfriend of mine has a romantic idea of western guys. She has worked for western companies for the last 5 years and claims that she has become 'too international' to date local guys. So she's hooked up with a bunch of (in my eyes) 'loser western guys' who she thinks are special, simply because: they are tall, they speak English, and they have some money. But they are not necessarily nice in any way? They just happen to be western and be in China. Why wouldn't she choose a local guy over these? At one time she was dating a guy who would call her only when he was drunk and wanted to hook up. During that time we once shared a taxi together when my bf called me. "Oh was he drunk?" she asked, when I had hung up. "No? He just wanted to say goodnight" I replied. "Just that?" "Just that." Yeah. Just that. |

![]() | it's understandable that foreign busineseemen work long term in china end up with chinese wives. this phenomenon exists in close or poor society and it's from poverty and ingnorance. however, in material and benefits driven developed societies, it has different forms with the same substance, ie, selling flesh and soul and lowering moral standards for 'high level' survial. I could be too critical... |
