The third: Yang Wei, who won the title of men's individual all-round gymnastics. The day before yesterday, Chinese won men's team gold medal.

Jimmy a lot of people are going to disagree with me but my opinion is that the medal tally/ranking is really gross and not what the Olympics is supposed to be about. It is supposed to be above politics but that’s probably a bit naïve as the IOC committee was until recently run by a bunch of aging fascist.
And while I’m in the pulpit I might as well mention the Olympic flame which was originally supposed to indicate the start of a truce in the then known world during the Games. That’s just been turned into a joke with one of the Olympic members just marching into a country that you could fit comfortably into down town Beijing.
Cheers, Dodger.

Agree, Dodger. We always hope "the Olympics shouldn't be connected with Politics" but have we realized this goal? Never. Remember how many times the Olympics were forced to stop due to the wars?

Here is the latest ranking:
China
US
Germany
South Korea
Italy

Just this morning, US got 3 gold medals.

Jimmy, governments that run elite identification programs and then fully fund these athletes along with coaches paid by the state by their very actions have politicized these games.
These athletes are owned by the state and are expected to perform therefore having a medal ranking would make sense to their fellow countrymen as they have paid for it.
As Paul has eluded too in another post, show me the sports grounds full of underage teams on a Saturday morning playing organized sport and then perhaps I will believe that China understands the real message and meaning of these games.

Each country is the same. They all choose the best athletes from their countries to compete at the Olympics. If they can win the gold medal, their country will reward them. Standing in front of the spotlight, they usually say " I am fighting for my the honour of my country....". Actually, they are all lured by the reward. It is the rewards that give them strength. Maybe I am too extreme but it is true.

My rankings:
China
US
?? As for the third, I have no idea. Russia seems not in its form. So far, it is out of Top five.

Update for gold medal rankings:
China 23
US 14
Germany 8
South Korea 6
Italy 6

Actually China has won 24 gold medals because the final of Women's Singles of Badminton is between two Chinese athletes. The United States got 4 gold medals this morning. Good Job.
