Times reports that China could become the first country to classify internet addiction as a clinical disorder. China's Health Ministry is expected to adopt a new manual on internet addiction next year, based on the research of Chinese psychologists. It will recognise the condition as similar to compulsive gambling or alcoholism. Tao Ran, who set up China’s first internet addiction clinic at the Military General Hospital in Beijing, said that he had reached his conclusion by studying more than 3,000 people over four years. A survey conducted by the China Network Information Centre said that about 10 per cent of young users suffer from addiction and of those about 70 per cent are male. China has a large quantity of web users (253 million people) and many younger netizens are inveterate participants in e-games.

It is not unreasonable to consider internet addiction in this way. There are many activities that become overimportant and may destroy your life. However, I also suspect that this psychology might be overused by some in positions of power. But the authorities should first pay attention to China's number one addiction and killer NICOTINE from smoking. About 90% of China's adult male population is addicted - REALLY ADDICTED and let's not forget that many deaths are of innocent persons often called 'passive smokers'. I trust this puts internet addiction in persective

Tanorexia, Shopaholism, Nomophobia, Cosmetic surgery addiction etc. What's wrong with modern people? I am watching my computer 8 hours every day because that is what my job requires. When I get back home, I watch my computer again, at least for 3 hours. Am I suffering from the internet addiction?

Paul is right about that. I am a smoker, smoke cigars. One of my uncles is right now in a hospital dying slowly because of lung cancer. Cancer goes in my family, so propably one I day will be in same situation. Wan, if want to find technical addictions, mobile phone addiction comes first, I think. It simply cost money, the more you use, the more you pay. Internet connection cost whatever it cost, use one minute or 10 hours/day. Katrina, modern city people have too much time and money and nothing else to do. Hmm... are you suffering?? Omly you can judge that. Carlos

I was around before the telephone and the TV were invented so there were a different set of addiction then. As I am a very bad letter writer so I find emails a godsend in regards to communication etc. What I can’t understand is why someone would want to spend hours in front of a screen playing games. Star Wars was hard enough for me and I found that totally frustrating. As a piece of trivia; did you know that the tailor made cigarette was invented by the Americans during the Civil war? Dodger.

Katrina, modern city people have too much time and money and nothing else to do. Hmm... are you suffering?? Omly you can judge that. Carlos, I have too much time but not much money, hehe. At weekends, I might feel bored and don't know what to do. Then I go windowshopping with my friends or just watch movies on my computer. And I don't think that internet addiction is a kind of mental illness. Some e-game fans said:" Even we are addicted to online games, how can you say that we suffer from the mental disorder?"

You can use your spare time on" Online working".

Internet & cellphone addictions? I think it is fair to say that in many cases. These addictions may also be the cause of many deaths in the USA: cellphone contribute to countless accidents; Internet violence/freak forums/games are credited with contributing to various forms of violence. Nice to know there's another cigar smoker here, Carlos. :-) Paying attention to my wife has left me with less time to pay attention to cigars.

Griz, it is true that internet and cellphone addictions cause terrible results. But we can't say that these guys who are addicted to internet and cellphone have mental disorders. These are two different things.

The ministry of Health has set the criteria for diagnosing internet addiction. One of the criteria is that the average access to the internet per day exceeds 6 hours and such condition lasts for three months or more than 3 months. According to this criterion, I am suffering the internet addiction. No, it should be mental disorder. I don't know how they make this conclusion. Do they consider about those guys who work on computers everyday? Do they all suffer from mental disorder? Just check yourself according to that rule.
