Audrey, in my opinon. Marilyn was tragically beautiful, but Audrey had true depth. Her childhood was tragic as well, having suffered through the depravities of war-torn Europe. Her trim figure was due to malnutrition and countless other diseases she suffered as a child. Marilyn was blonde, buxomy, blue eyed and fair: the epitomy of what was "ideal" in the 1950's (jayne mansfield, etc). Audrey was different. She entered the scene the complete opposite of what was considered feminine, (tall, brunette, lean, boyish) and in some ways redefined it. Or at least broadened the definition. Look at models today. They certainly look more like Audrey than Marilyn. Audrey proved that 36-26-26 are not the narrow perimeters with which to define beauty. Audrey wasn't simply a vulnerable, sad, breathy, woman-child, but a unique and strikingly beautiful nymph. She had a certain allure and a je ne sais quoi that has enchanted movie goers for years. She was also the better actress. Beauty is disputable, but Audrey's abilities on the screen far surpassed that of Marilyn's. This isn't to say I don't enjoy the films of Marilyn - I just watched Some Like it Hot and I love it as much as ever, and her in it. In her defense, she often got stuck playing the "dumb blonde" roles - when she was far from being a dumb blonde in real life. It would have been nice to see her play a meaty role, although studio executives and her own mess of a personal life probably prevented it. As for the person who said no one tries to imitate Audrey- ummm hello? Her look endures today. The little black dress? She is a fashion legend. She recently had an entire Life magazine devoted to her. Countless actresses - from Diane Keaton to Natalie Portman - list her as an influence. It's all silly to me. Both were beautiful in their own way. Why compare? I'm sure most women would give their left arm to be as beautiful as either.
