Xuxian Lou
By DAISYC | 1/31/2012 3:37:45 AM
I had a very enjoyable evening here when I went. The food is Zheijang style and therefore was very fresh. We ordered tofu hot pot that was delicious and warming in the freezing weather! The restaurant also has a Western dessert menu, we ate a tasty creme brulee. It is also located in the Workers Stadium so was very easy to get to from our hotel....much recommended!

Really authentic Beijing food
By MAGIPAGI | 3/16/2008 9:03:39 AM
All local Beijingers would know about the famous 'Peking barbecue' restaurant, Kaorouji 烤肉季. It first started in 1848 in the Qing dynasty and was rebuilt in 1995. This 'Chinese old name' restaurant serves authentic Chinese Ismalic cuisine, with the famous dishes like slices of barbecue meat Kaorou 烤肉 and Baked Sesame Seed Cake Shaobing 烧饼. It is situated along the north bank of Qianhai 前海 in the Houhai area 后海, opposite the Silver Ingot Bridge Yinding Qiao 银锭桥.
This restaurant has a very small branch along Yan Dai Xie Jie Slanting Pipe Street 烟袋斜街, also really close to the Silver Ingot Bridge Yinding Qiao 银锭桥. This place is a real find; a lady stands at the small entrance and calls upstairs to the waiter (who I think is her husband) to get you a seat, as they only have seats upstairs; she does it with a real Beijing accent! You go up a narrow flight of stair to the small restaurant full of proper old Beijingers like rickshaw drivers and the like. The waiter is an old Beijinger as well and has a traditional politeness about him. The view from the upstair window is great and you can witness the hussle bussle of the Yan Dai Xie Jie Slanting Pipe Street 烟袋斜街 down below. The food is very traditional and delicious - needless to say the slices of barbecue meat Kaorou 烤肉 and Baked Sesame Seed Cake Shaobing 烧饼. They also make great meat pancakes Roubing 肉饼 and the BEST Sour plum juice Suanmei Tang 酸梅汤, which is a sweet and slightly sour drink that is very cool and refreshing in the summer (this place makes it with real rock sugar, not normal sugar like you get in the bottled ones in the supermarket). If you want something that you can't get anywhere else in China - try Fermented Mung Bean Juice Douzhi 豆汁- but it's not for the fainted-hearted because it stinks! The only downside is that I don't think they have English menus and the waiter probably can't speak English.

Beautiful Beijing
By JULINE | 4/13/2007 2:47:47 AM
I have just returned from a very brief holiday in Beijing. I fell in love with the city. One day involved visiting the Great Wall at Simitai and the next day we visited Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City. Two days was just not enough and I will be returning for at least a two week vacation to experience more. We had dinner at 'Da Dong' restaurant and it was FANTASTIC! Peking duck, salmon sashimi and assorted dishes for four people came to AUD$100 (including drinks). The service was exemplary and the food was divine. There is a minimum wait time of 30 minutes (minimum) as the restaurant does not take bookings. However, believe me, it is well worth the wait. I do not speak Chinese at all, however, the staff could not have been more accomodating. Do yourself a favour and savour the delights that Da Dong has to offer. The menu (beautifully presented) is in English as well! Cannot wait to get back there. Also, the shopping at the Silk Market (5 levels of fun) was incredible and the shop owners are very funny. Bought some fantastic clothes and bags there at great prices.

Eating In Beijing
By FLANKER | 2/7/2006 6:46:10 AM
Generally, dinning in Beijing is not so expensive. Beijing has a lot of restaurants which meets consumers' different needs. Roast duck is strongly recommended. The most famous roast duck restaurant is Quanjude, which has a lot of branch stores all over beijing. However, you can always order a roast duck in most medium-sized restaurants in beijing. The cost is around $4-20 per duck depends on different stores. One order can serve 2-4 people, of course you should order other food. For further information, you can contact flanker1118@yahoo.com.cn

Beijing Roast Duck
By CALIFORNIA | 1/20/2006 7:07:15 PM
Most of you know Beijing Roast Duck, and it is so delicious! And there were many restaurants can made it in Beijing! Quanjude is the famous,of course,it is the most expensive!!! If you come to Beijing the first time,I think you should take it in Quanjude!About 450---650RMB/2persons! And if you lived in Beijing or came here many times,I think you can choose another restaurant, maybe it is different from taste, but it is also good as Quanjude. You can find it in everywhere:-)
cheers!
