Qi Xian Youth Hostel
By CLARENCE | 12/22/2005 3:15:02 AM

This nice little hostel is situated along Bei Xin Jie. Since it's winter, there is only a handful of travellers there. The room is nice and cozy, and very clean! The architecture of the place makes you feel that you are staying in a old chinese street, cos they still retain about 90% of the old building. Staff are friendly and everyone is willing to help. And they even teach me and my friend like 100 different types of dice games!

This is quite a new hostel which opened in October 2005, and plus the small number of travellers during winter period, I cannot comment on the running of the hostel. You guys can go and try!

Cheap and Nice place to stay in Xian
By ELCABRON | 2/19/2005 9:58:33 PM

If you go to Xian pass by the Railwaystation quarter as soon as possible. There are many hotels (next to all these hairdressershops....) but they are of poor quality.

The best one I could find was the CHUYUAN Hostel Phone: (29)-7287721. It is situated right at the NanMen - the South Gate of the City Wall. Take Bus No. 603 from the railwaystation to the South Gate. Walk to the right side of the Gate, just before passing through the Wall take the last alley on the right side - it is a small path only for one car at a time. Less than 50 meters and you will find this great place.
Everything is in an old traditional style, really cute. Employees are very young and helpful. They are all dressed in traditional clothes which fit to the architecture of the building.
They are also quite flexible with prices - a double room cost us 100 yuan.
They also offer a nice cuisine for afordable prices, even though I always prefer the streetkitchens throughout the Muslim Quarter.
The location is just perfect, when you get out of the Hotel doors you run right into the Great City Wall! You can not get any closer with your bed!
It is only a five to ten minutes walk to the Bell tower, the center of the old city.
Enjoy your stay!

Where to stay in Xi'an?
By HARRY | 3/30/2004 5:21:26 PM

My wife and I stayed at the Grand New World Hotel, which is inside the old walled city and within walking distance of the Bell Tower, Great Mosque and close to the Muslim quarter. Hotel was 4-star and very nice, rates about $100.00 US. Hotel food was very pricey and tried to appeal to westerners in China. ie. not very authentic. But there was a great little mom-and -pop joint across the street, where some previous visitors had translated at least some of the menu into English and dinner for two was less than $20.00, beer included.
There's also a Great New World Hotel, a few blocks away, but it didn't look so hot from the outside.

Our first afternoon, after we got settled in the hotel about 3:00 o'clock, we walked, in search of an ATM, about a mile form the hotel to the Bank Of China. Never did find an ATM, but we came across a city park where they had a public puppet show every afternoon.

I think if you stay outside of the old walled city, hotel trates go down by about 25%, but you're not so close to the attractions. If you link to www.taxitour.com you'll get in touch with a fabulous guide for a one day tour of Terracotta warriors, cave dwellers and banpo village/museum. I can't rate this guy highly enough, he "made" our trip to Xi'an. There's an English University in Xi'an, and we hired one of the students to be our city guide for one day. I think I knew more about the attractions we wanted to see than she did, but once she knew what we wanted to see, she figured out how to get there and we all had a learning experience.

Have fun!
