I'm going to be in Beijing for a very short time in June. As soon as I get there I want to take the sleeper train to Xian for a day. Does anyone know if I can book the train on the internet? Or would I be able to turn up and book on the day? (I don't speak Chinese.) Also, how much would a guide in Xian cost for a day - or do I not need one? Thanks all.

Perhaps someone will write out the following for you in Chinese characters:

"May I purchase a ticket for a (HARD/SOFT) sleeper to Xian."

I believe most will recommend a hard sleeper, but you must make that choice.

If you print out those characters, it will simplify getting your tickets.

Yes, Griz is right. Buying the train ticket online or through phone call cost extra fees. You can have a try to print the characters and show it to the clerk in train station. But you can ask your hotel staff to book it for your convenience.

And Xian is a good city to visit with tour guide cos you may have troubles on understanding the history and culture. When I was there last summer, I went to visit the historical museum and hire a guide at the gate. Plus, you cannot speak Chinese, so it's better to ask someone to help you. :P

Hi Kitty
Neither of us spoke Chinese but we went to the Central Train station and purchsed our tickets to Xi'an without any trouble- look for the English/Foreign counter, we bought two days in advance and had no problem. Soft sleeper tickets are easiest to get but more expensive. Some hotels will book them for you for an extra 20-50 RMB if you are worried. Good Luck.

Make sure you go to the West Station to catch your train. It's about a half-hour cab ride away from the Central Train station area.

GUEST44172 Hi!

I am looking for the same information. I looked online, and found the schedule, it is really only $30-60 USD one-way for the sleepers?

GUEST16062 We visited the Terracotta warriors and when we arrived we were met by gentleman employed by the government that spoke pretty good English. He charged 100 RMB( about $14.00) to escort us around and explain everything in English. WELL worth the money!!!
