| At present, many foreigners are beginning to learn Chinese mandarin. However, people in some rural areas don’t speak mandarin. They just speak their dialect. As a Chinese, I have difficulties in understanding the dialects, for example, Cantonese. What about you? What do you think of the dialects? Do you think it is useful to learn some dialects? Take “吃饭了吗?” for example (Chinese say it when greeting people). Mandarin: “你吃饭了吗?” The dialect in north east China: “吃了没,没吃整两盅去?” Chengdu dialect in Sichuan: “你吃饭了没得?” Hebei dialect: “吃饭了没?” In general, people in the north part of China usually say: “吃了么,吃了吗,吃饭了么,吃饭了吗?” Zhejiang dialect: “侬个七饭辣?” Foshan dialect: “食左饭未?” Anhui dialect: “你个七饭勒?” |

| The dialects are really hard to understand. Take Cantonese for example, I hardly understand what people are taking in TV or movies. Zhejiang dialect is very interesting. When I was in college, one of my roommates is Zhejiangese. Everytime she talks to his parents, we didn't know what she was talking. It sounded as Japanese. |
