Provided you arrive on or before the expiry date you should have no poroblem. You are perfectly entitled to enter for a single day. Of course you must apply for the new residency permit before it expires or you are likely to have to apply for a new visa.

GUEST25365 Hi! I am a holder of Philippine passport expiring on May 2010. I am working in China with a residence permit. I have renewed my passport last week and it will take 6 weeks to get a new one. I am going home to the Philippines on December 11 returning to China on December 14. Will China immigration allow me to leave since my passport is less than the 6 months validity? If China will allow me to board, Philippine immigration will allow me to enter since it is my right as a citizen. However, will Philippine immigration allow me to leave Philippines for China? Appreciate your help. Thank you very much.

GUEST23205 Yes, you can enter if you have a valid visa. Check Passport Validity:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china/entry-requirements

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your visa application. If you have less than 6 months’ validity on your passport, but have a valid visa, you should be able to enter China for the duration of that visa.

The minimum validity period should be six months. If you plan to apply in October, then you should make sure that your passport should be valid for six months at least in October.

I am afraid that you can't. To apply for a Chinese visa, you have to ensure that your passport is still valid at least six months.

Similar question -
My daughter traveled to visit us on a 10-year tourist visa. When she arrived Shanghai, her Visa was valid for 6 months (almost exactly). When she went to travel out of China today, her passport was flagged as "invalid". But China Eastern reviewed & permitted her to fly. BUT - she's coming back to China in August for a short stay. At that time, her passport will have only 3 1/2 months validity. Since she's on a tourist visa, will she have trouble re-entering? I assumed all was ok since her passport had not expired. ?

Also - my other children who have a Chinese residence permit & US passport that both expire on December 11 of this year. We are traveling to US & will return August - both will have 3 1/2 months validity. Any issue with re-entry?

I have asked Chinese Embassy, US Embassy, and our immigration specialists here in China. All have vague answers -- saying its up to the immigration officer to decide.

Any advice? We travel in 4 days, and will not be together as a family for summer to allow passport renewal while in the US.

Trouble?

GUESTDAVIS I don’t think she will be refused to enter because only when one applies for a visa, his/her passport must have a remaining validity of 6 months. But as you said, she just enters and stays for a short time, and has valid passport, I don’t think it will have any problem.

Because your other children have the residence permit, they can re-enter as long as the residence permit is valid. But if they still want to stay in China, they should apply for an extension of the residence permit one month earlier before it expires.
