  • Famous For Being Cold
    | Harbin | LEMONCACTUS | Nov 20, 2006 05:11 GMT-5

A mere 5 civilised train hours from Jilin City is the most famous cold city in China: Harbin. Travellers tales abound about how cold this place really gets and I was more than a little apprehensive even after braving the permanence of the sub-zero temperatures of its fellow northeast Provinces of Liaoning and Jilin.

I was pleasantly surprised therefore to arrive in Harbin and find myself still moving although my ears were quickly numbed. At a roundabout I stopped to ...

Shuttle Bus
DUNC | Sep 25, 2006 19:30 GMT-5

From Harbin airport, leave baggage claim and walk straight and purposefully to the exit which will be almost directly ahead of you (it's a very small airport), avoid the taxi drivers, (100+ RMB to town) and head for the ticket office for the bus, if no-one is there, wait, they will come back!

If you wait a long time check outside, there's normally a bus waiting and they'll guide you to the ticket booth if you missed it.

It's only 20 RMB to the town centre.(AUG 2006)

The bus will pass the RAILWAY STATION after about 30-35 minutes,(cheaper Hotels from 120 pppn).

The final stop is approx. 10 minutes later at the CAAC Hotel, it's about half way down ZHONGSHAN LU, one of the main arterial routes through town.

Bus 103 1Y standard 2Y AirCon from Song Hua River (North) to Hong Qi Street (South East) via Station/Qulin Shopping Area/ Zhongshan Lu from roughly 0530-2230.

Be For Time Tea Houses

Recommeding this place as somewhere to escape from the bitter cold of winter in Harbin. Great place to people watch and relax.

Cafe like atmosphere, small tables on different levels. You can read magazines or the morning paper, play cards or watch videos on the TVs suspended from the ceiling.

For 18RMB you can order as many drinks as you like: tea, soft drinks and warm milk drinks. You also get comlimentary dishes of nuts and fruits. You can order food or ice cream etc, this will cost extra.

Enjoy :)
