Zhuokeji a is small village with a beauty and simplicity that captured my heart. More important is the beauty of the people. A small minority group called the Zang, of the Jiarong Tibetans they have remained quietly isolated in their steep mountain valleys until the 1930's when Mao's Red Army shattered the serenity of the stunningly beautiful Suomo valley.

Overnight in Chengdu while revisiting Zhuokeji near Maerkang.

Leshan with her red bluffs, home to DaFo - the Big Buddha, is our last stop followed by an interesting seven hour bus trip back to Chongqing.

We slowly descend into the beautiful Suomo valley to Zuokeji just outside Maerkang. Here we discover the stone blockhouses and their defensive towers and homestay with a local family. Our next stop is Taoping, another stone block village with defensive towers in a similarly rugged but drier river valley.

Flying into Songpan, we overnight in this frontier town of Sichuan's Wild West. From here we travel to Hongyuan grasslands and Tanke near the First Bend on the Yellow River, where we encounter the local Tibetan minority living on this high altitude plateau.
From the almost dry and desolate Hua Hu and Ruoergai where it snows overnight we head south to warmer weather.

Zhongshan Gu Zhen - A beautiful 'oldtown' far enough from the city to be a good weekend getaway but close enough to make it an enjoyable trip back through time.

Haikou
February 21, 2007 - February 24, 2007

During the Spring Festival break I escape to Haikou and destinations north to escape the more expensive Sanya. I visit the Coconut forests of Wenchang on the east and the north westerly cape and lighthouse at Lingao

Sanya
February 18, 2007 - March 2, 2007

Seeking some sun has drawn me to Hainan during Spring Festival which is still bitterly cold in Chongqing. I spend a week travelling up the wast coast from Sanya to Haikou back again across country through Lingao, Danzhou, Qiongzhong, Wuzhishan, Baisha, Changjiang and Basua. I spend my final five days relaxing on the beach soaking up the sun and swimming everyday.
