Go for a cup of coffee to get to know new friends | Shanghai | Jul 26, 2005 15:19
First week in China. First time Nanjing Rd. - Sunday - crowded. A girl asked me, walking alone along the pedestrian area of Nanjing Road, if I want to go for a cup of coffee. She wants to study English in autumn and maybe we can exchange a bit. I had a bad feeling, but I thought - Hey man, that are prejudices maybe, be open-minded and spend an hour with this nice girl! She brought me through an jewelery store to an upper floor into a caf? She talked to the waiters - so I already noticed, that she knew them. They denied giving us a table at the window (facing Nanjing Rd) and said we have to take a separe?- I felt strange - saw the menue - and it was incredible expensive. With the result that I ordered just a small beer (was cheaper than coffee) for 80RNB. They brought fruits and 2-3 drinks for the girls (within 3 minutes) - I felt bad and ordered the bill. I got it - 750RNB!! Suddenly the girl was (acting) telling me, she didnt knew when she ordered and the waiters told me I have to pay. Of course she had no money and I had to pay. There where about 3 waiters and suddenly no one could speak anymore. So - I was tricked. And I knew I am the foreigner - and I cannot argue in any way, not able of any word in Chinese.
The most expensive beer I ever have been for.
