Liaoning
February 27, 2005 - August 30, 2006

I lived in the (relatively) unknown city of Benxi. Famous for its nearby Water Caves and once being invisible to satellite because of pollution. Simultaneously beautiful and ugly: my home. Any questions about Benxi, just ask ;)

Shanhaiguan
July 7, 2006 - July 9, 2006

First stop: Bi Jia Shan Island in Jinzhou. A causeway emerges from the sea to allow you to walk to the Island.
Then to Shanhaiguan to see the Great Wall meeting the sea... and stumble across a SNAKE!

Ningxia
April 29, 2006 - May 8, 2006

A tiny province (or Autonomous region) touching Inner Mongolia, Gansu and Shaanxi Provinces. Spent an inspiring 6 days here (with California), quite unlike anywhere in China I've visited before. A mixture of sand, heat, mountains, rivers and mosques. Large Hui population who are devoted to Islam. 100% recommend this place as a distinctly different experience of China!

Beijing
February 2, 2006 - February 9, 2006

Beijing again...Unfinished business with the Forbidden City and other places. Met up with California (TCG), who is an excellent host !! And how lucky was I... a day of thick, fabulous SNOW transformed the city. Yippeee.

Inner Mongolia
January 22, 2006 - January 24, 2006

A day in Manzhouli... very strange, dislocated town on the border between China and Russia. Many Russians here, be prepared (if you're Western) to be addressed in Russian by the locals... odd feeling place, I just didn't like it. Superb snowy, flat scenery all the way on the 12 hour train journey though!!

Harbin
January 20, 2006 - January 22, 2006

Wonderful Harbin... perhaps my favourite city in China so far. Great shopping, eating, temples, stunning snow and ice festivals, frozen rivers and Russian architecture haunting the city. Cold, cold, cold though!! Brrrrrr.

Jilin
January 17, 2006 - January 20, 2006

Stayed in Jilin City just for the Wu Song and I wasn't disappointed. Fabulous frost phenomenon caused by hot river meeting freezing fog, for the best effects get up before sunrise... and wrap up warm :)

Liaoning
October 3, 2005 - October 8, 2005

To Dandong to see the North Korean Border. Weird. To Da Lu Dao - secret island, I don't want to say too much, loved it!To Xiu Yan. Also known as Jade Town. To buy some cheap jade and stay in a farmers house. Eye-opening stuff.

Yunnan
August 2, 2005 - August 12, 2005

Kunming - no time to stop here, but great baozi from a street vendor! Dali - old town, picturesque. Tiger Leaping Gorge - great trek, scenery to die for, very quiet. WOW. LiJiang - what a city. Old & Magnificent.

Guangxi
July 27, 2005 - August 1, 2005

Guilin to Yangshuo. Guilin - disappointed, but think I didn't see the 'real' Guilin. It was scorching hot. Yangshuo - splendid. Stunning scenery. Hire a bike and exlore. Do a cruise on the river from Xingping. Don't forget to try out the bamboo rafting and take a swim.
