Tai'an
January 24, 2007 - January 26, 2007

My first trip into Shandong Province has left me wanting more. Winter, snow and very, very few people were climbing the 9999 steps of Tai Shan. I had the morning snow and sun and blue sky to myself.

Shanghai
October 19, 2006 - October 21, 2006

Finally made it after a year and a half in China. Visited Yuyuan Gardens and the Jade Buddha Temple. Saw more Westerners in these 2 days than in the last 18 months combined - truly! A packed city, tall and amazing at night...

Zhejiang
October 3, 2006 - October 5, 2006

I travelled to Yanguan, home of the world's largest tidal bore... which was only little when I was there! :( Still, the town is lovely, with canals and they were filming a TV show there...a famous Chinese star walked passed me, but I didn't know who he was. Also spent a day climbing Mount Tianmu near Lin'an: wonderful scenery and huge trees.

Dalian
August 23, 2006 - August 26, 2006

At last, made it to the famous, much-hyped Dalian to visit a friend. Great to see the sea, but disappointed in the smoggy skies and litter in the ocean :( Took the fast monorail train out to Jinshitan Beach and made delicious seafood dumplings. The seafood here really is superb..... yum!

Inner Mongolia
August 19, 2006 - August 22, 2006

It's been a summer of tiny towns and Aershan is no exception: smallest of all. Pinetree-hills surround this place. Home to a wonderful forest park of volcanic landscape and my second Heavenly Lake of the trip. Clean & quiet...am I still in China ?

Inner Mongolia
August 16, 2006 - August 18, 2006

Go to North East Inner Mongolia, keep heading East and you'll come to Moerdaoga. Another tiny town with a stunning national park...cue pinetrees and blue skies. Clean, quiet, marvellous. Explored the park, rafted on the river and chilled out.

Jilin
August 14, 2006 - August 15, 2006

Found myself in the end-of-the-road town of Xianghai along with an incredible sunset, marshlands, villages distinctly different from elsewhere in Jilin Province, a curious temple and about 10 million insects.

Changchun
August 11, 2006 - August 13, 2006

Well. Unexpected. Changchun is a great city. Checked out the amazing World Sculpture Park and luxuriated in this clean and green Chinese City. I really loved the feel and atmosphere here, now my favourite North East city (sorry Harbin....)

Jilin
August 4, 2006 - August 10, 2006

Visited the tiny and fabulous town of Ji'an to check out the ruins of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom. Then to Changbaishan to see the mountain top Heavenly Lake. Also to Yanji to soak up some Korean influences and to Fangchuan on a motorbike to look out over the point where Russia, N Korea and China meet.

Liaoning
July 21, 2006 - July 22, 2006

Two unexpected days in the small town of Huanren located in the far East of Liaoning. Climbed Wunu Mountain, tasted some wines and visited Daya River. Got soaked one day and sunburnt the next. Joined a Shenyang tour group. Got marooned for 3 hours in the middle of Liaoning's countryside when my bus broke down. All good fun!
