Yuyuan Garden
DENNIS | Shanghai | 4/28/2004 4:38:01 PM

Yuyuan is a must see once you're in Shanghai! It's a mixture of both modern and ancient surroundings! There are so many things to see and buy...this is where you have to be on your guard...the prices of the various merchandise are extremely expensive! Should you have some time to do your shopping outside Shanghai, do it! Shop anywhere else except in Shanghai. I discovered this when I got to go to the other cities having the same goods which were much much lower in price!

The Hutongs
DENNIS | Beijing | 4/28/2004 4:16:39 PM

While in Beijing, I joined this tour group that included a visit to the Hutong Alleys...once I paid my 60yuan ticket, the tour guide left me with another guide...unfortunately it was said in Chinese and since it was such a big group and me being the only foreigner(also looking like a chinese)who am I to complain! The sites were not as fascinating and the place was simply a drag! For 60 yuan, you might as well buy dozens of cut-paper art!

Certificate of the climb!
DENNIS | Beijing | 4/28/2004 4:09:56 PM

Hey guys,

Going to the Great Wall is definitely a must! I was so enthralled that when I got to one of the posts selling certificates that you did indeed climb the Wall, I hastily bought one. I got one without my picture in it for 30yuan!...as I walked further there were other stalls with the same service but with much lower price and with your photo in it! So for you guys out there...haggle a little!

What to know
DENNIS | Suzhou | 4/25/2004 9:16:52 PM

Ni Hao,

Being a foreigner in China, is quite demanding as you would have to struggle with the language barrier. My best tip for people travelling from one place to another is to know the chinese character of the place you intend to go to and make sure you jot down the plate number of the bus...it may prove very helpful once you leave some stuff behind. When I was at the bus station I paid for a ticket to go to Taizhou, what I didn't know was that the bus I rode was just stopping over at the place, it was not actually its final destination. I had to get down right before reaching the toll gate leading to the main highway as I suspected something was amiss. In my haste, I left some of my stuff in the bus. Luckily a bus station I went to helped me find my stuff having showed them the ticket. I was lucky then...others might not be so lucky..so be careful!
