What is freedom?
What is freedom? If freedom is living in a society where people sport huge credit debts. Work in companies using systems created for the sole purpose of "leaching" from other systems - Driven by Java-script, ASP, PHP, DHTML, XML, SWF - the list seems endless... - Form Fields, that reduce us to impersonal "boxed" stereo types - dehumanising personal contact, for the sole benefit of corporate profit gain. Reducing Employee's to highly educated data entry clerks - subtle user/subscriber systems, reap more profit, but circulate less social capital wealth.
All this, bolstered by over legislation - driving the inflation of consumer goods and services through the roof - over inflating wages - and/or generating more dept. Capitalising on legislation and legislating to capitalise... A world of madness... Western society seems to be on the verge of a huge hang-over. I find it strange, that as a society, we readily will embrace anything that will exploit us... We so formally boast of the west - the land of the fee and prosperous - cheers, I'll drink to that...Green tea all round my good man...
While on the subject, i would be doing you all a terrible injustice in not mentioning, the insanity of political correctness, howeverisum and mind-numbing mediocrity.
Sorry, ah'm a simple man, maybe a little "delusional" and see this as the state of western society - and of the freedom it boast. Ah've taken this article from the Sydney Morning Herald.
"A dark cloud of wowserism is descending on Sydney.
It first appeared at Manly, where they're now shutting pubs before the sun comes up. Where's the fun in that? Now it's over Randwick. In the first move of an impressive temperance two-step, the council has allowed the beachside Maroubra Bay Hotel to have outdoor tables, but banned drinking alcohol while sitting at them. Go to the pub, sit outside, don't drink beer."

If its not this sort of shameful folly, its some other lame indiscretion chiseling its way into the recesses of western annalisum. Timely - spewing forth - keeping the cogs of some fat bastard's in-box full of pressing matters - pending... As, under his coffee stenched breath he sh*ts on about how little he's earning and how-so-f**ken-hard-his-days-has-been - to her indoors.
I think i found it...
I see people in China ( The People's Republic) going about business with a smile. And in most part the poorer they are the happier they seem. They're selling their wares - fake or otherwise - and plying their trade. They econimise and collaborate with one another. They don't pretend to have it all - they don't pretend to have the answer to it all. The majority have simple lives, that revolve around their families and friends. With less complexity. 'Did i say less complexity'? They have ingenious solutions to problems, and in most part the government leaves them to it.
Conclusion.
To sum up - whether you are a westerner in China or Chinese. You still have options. You don't need corporate capital and a shit load of suits riding your gravy train to spin up an entiprise - a little "Guanxi" helps. Unlike the west, the option still exists to live a poor life without dept... The west offers one life - styled by the intent of a few, to capitalise on the masses... take it or leave it... I left it. Happily putting up with the idiosyncratic nature of things. Where drinking a two yuan beer on the street is - well - just that...
And what is left for us in the west - not much i fear. We have been harvested, sterilised - stuck in green houses neatly rowed - Fed on a diet of commercial substitution. Our mushroomed economies laden with the spores of venture capital - blowing ominously towards pastures greener - to the far flung - as yet un-tilled soils. In the hope of infesting what is now a diverse, idiosyncratic, culturally rich and somewhat naturally evolving socialist society. Bringing with it all the complexity and uniformity that has stifled western economies over the past decade. I feel partially responsible for this, as a foreigner living here... Although, I have come with the intent to experience this culturally rich country and experience what it has to offer before we so wantonly try to enforce our model economic structures on its naive and impartial citizens.

I've been to China last Sep for 9 days, on unplanned trip. Beijing/Great Wall, etc 5 days; Shanghai, 4. I was impressed by the beautty, progress and people as well. They sure look much more relaxed, happy than us. Traffic is crazzy, but I haven't seen no accident, law inforcement at all. They smilled to us, took pics of us. People were wearing pajamas in the evening streets of Shanghai. Kids played on side walks. Parents/neighbors were chatting/playing games. No pressure. I'm affraid that one day soon they will have the same life style that we have now, wrongly so called "freedom". I hope not... I had the desire to live in China for a while. Should be a great opportunity/experience.
