My husband and I just got back from China and I would encourage anyone who wants to have an amazing experience to explore Chinese cities that are "off the beaten track".
We focused on southwest China and found it to be refreshingly unspoiled by Western commercialism and totally beautiful. The ethnic minority villages near Kaili were so amazing...we loved them most of all. The festivals, the hospitality (we stayed in a local village house), the scenary. (We're budget travelers who found a great guide in the area...she was fantastic for hooking us up with transportation, translation, and an introduction to the local culture.)
We've been to Hong Kong and Beijing...both interesting in their own way. But if I go back, I'll return to Kaili and the villages, Yangshao and other towns in the southwest provinces.

Good on you! I'm heading back down there in two weeks with a local contact. I have the luxury of living here and travleing quite often. Can't wait. While Beijing and other major cities have so much to offer most visitors to China seldom take 'a road less travelled' and consequiently never experience some of the best China has to offer.
