Shanghai Old Quarter
ELCABRON | Shanghai | 2/21/2005 12:41:57 AM

A must see in Shanghai is certainly the Old Town of Shanghai. And I am not talking about the the new tourist traps built close around the YuYuan Garden, where only strange souvenirs are offered. Skip that and check the narrow alleys surroundung it. Streets with houses not higher than two storeys, no sewer system except the cans in front of the doors in the morning and washed clothes hanging over the streets from one house to another. This is the last part of the true old city. There are no tourist shops but busy Chinese shops, street kitchens and market alleys, where Chinese people shop. Everything is vivid and relaxed at the same time, because there are no cars, no modern progress disturbing the scenery.
But steel and concrete is already at the gates! Skyscrapers are coming closer each time I get to Shanghai.
I hope that even dispite the missing luxury of modern living that some people might miss, some parts get protected like the Hutongs in Beijing.

The highest Bar in Town!

If you like to enjoy your drinks along with the best view over the city of Shanghai, try CLOUD 9 of the JinMao Tower. The way up is a little bit confusing because compared to the view platform you have to change the lift at least twice. Sometimes you have to wait for a seat and prices are not the cheapest - but the view is worth it!

Biking and Floating around Yangshuo
ELCABRON | Yangshuo | 2/20/2005 11:03:17 PM

Take a bike tour around Yangshuo on your own. Bikes are for rent for 10 Kuai a day. And the surrounding Karst Mountains and villages are worth to be explored on your own!
You can also hire a bamboo raft to float down the Jinbao. It is a small branch of the Li River. You can enjoy the magnificent landscape all on your own with a quiet surrounding.
No Helloooo! shouting for tourists at all.

Delicious Indian Food
ELCABRON | Hong Kong | 2/20/2005 11:01:43 PM

The shabby building of the Chungking Mansions on Nathan Road is famous for many things. Bunker atmosphere, hookers whistling around every corner: Fake Rolex? Cheap suit? Marijuana? Girls?!?
But despite all the negative reasons for avoiding it you should give this building a try. Just because of the best Indian restaurants in town. They are quite famous, that is why I sometimes had to wait up to 45 minutes to get a table - but it was worth it!

Try some delicious Beer Fish in Yangshuo!
ELCABRON | Yangshuo | 2/20/2005 10:52:35 PM

Try some BEER FISH in Yangshuo, it is supposed to be the Pride of this Region! And yes it is delicious! But the Chinese who accompanied me went to the kitchen not only to choose the right fish but also stayed with the cook to make sure that the chosen fish is really on our plates. I guess they know how things run.
By the way be carefull with the propane gas cookers on the tables. Suddenly the whole crowd got excited and ran out of the restaurant, but I did not understand what they were shouting. Anyway in these moments run with the herd! Later I found out that one propane gas hose ripped of, but they fixed it before something bad could happen and we could go on with the delicious meal.
