Man, Woman, Drink, Eat in ambiguous Guangzhou
PEPPERMINT | Guangzhou | 3/11/2005 11:46:28 AM

For woman, shopping in Guangzhou is sure to satisfy you with Teem Plaza, Times Square, Guangzhou Merchandize Department Store, Xin Da Xin and multifarious boutiques. What I want to recommend today is Ba Bai Ban, a hairdressing salon. There are many branches and the one I went to is located at Hong Cheng Mall, East to Teem Plaza. It is on the first floor on the east side of the mall. The price is 2 times that of a barbershop but it is worthwhile.

Drink
If u like Chinese tea, I would say Lanpu in Yue Xiu Park is a good place. You can choose anywhere in the park and have the whole tearoom to yourselves. The environment is fabulous, without noisy ads, karaok or bubbling crowds like most parks. The ticket to the Park is 8 yuan and it will be deducted from your tea cost. That is to say is you drink tea there, you dont have to pay for the entrance fee, wonderful, isnt it?

There are many cafes around Xiao Bei and Tianhe Nan. Also there is Star Bucks on Huanshi Dong Road. Cafes around Xiao Bei are worth trying since each of them has its selling point. UCB is where u can enjoy all: tea, coffee, meals-Chinese and Western.

Eat
I have talked about Guangyuan Road. This time I will introduce Pao Ma Chang in Tian He District. Sichuan, Hunan, Shanxi dishes can all be found here as well as, of cos, Canton dishes like seafood.
Liu Hua Zhou Cheng at Liuhua Park is also good, where u can taste all kinds of congee. The unlovely side is it is very noisy with the smell of seafood just under ur nostrils.
Shangxijiu offers all original local snacks but if u r a gourmet, local food offered in surrounding cities like Shunde and Nanhai would sate u more. Generally speaking, food in Guagnzhou has been adjusted to cater to the popular taste.

Restaurants in Guangyuan Road
PEPPERMINT | Guangzhou | 3/11/2005 10:07:49 AM

Around Gurangyuan Road, there are many eateries. The city-known Greenery Cafe can be found here. Also A Li Lang Korean Restaurant is a better choice than Jin Da Zhuang on Huanshi Dong Road. The price is lower but the food is better since the rent on Huangshi Dong is much more expensive! And service and surroundings of A Li Lang are also better! Xiangxiazai offers Guilin cuisines. There are also many soup experts like Wu Ling Shan Zheng though the hygiene condition is not that ideal. Dont know why Macau Street is always so crowded. Actually the food is just so so and the price is a little bit higher. If food instead of other factors is your premium consideration, go to Guangyuan Road.

Guilin's free services
PEPPERMINT | Guilin | 12/17/2004 3:55:41 PM

Sanhua wine, preserved bean curd and chilic sauce are Guilin's three treasures.
And I am gonna introduce Guilin's three free services: free buses, free park and free toilets.
free bus lines
No.51 from Donghuan Parking Lot to Guilin Station
No.52 from Donghuan Parking Lot to Seven-Star Park
No.53 from Gongjiao Company to Beiji Square
No.54 from Guilin Southern Company to Hi-tech Zone(via Chuanshan Park)
No.55 from Pingshan to Cheguansuo
No.56 from Pingshan back to Pingshan (via Nanxi Park)
No.57 from Xifeng Road via Elephant Trunk Hill Park back to Xifeng Road
No.58 from Nanxi Park to Reed Flute Park
This route is very convenient since it passes almost all the major attractions like Elephant Trunk Hill Park, Seven Star Park, Folk Customs Center, Fubo Hill Park, Diecai Hill Park, Yu Hill Park.
Most buses charge CNY 1(without air-con). The one with air-con, No.99 Bus costs CNY2.

Bridge exposition park is also free. It is made up of 19 bridges, patterned after world famous bridges like Zhaozhou Bridge in China, Alexander Bridge over the Seine, etc.

Another good news is all the public toilets ( nearly 900) in Guilin are free.

Good places behind Teem Plaza
PEPPERMINT | Guangzhou | 12/15/2004 12:26:17 PM

For anyone going to Teem Plaza, Tianhe, you can have some mediocre food in the 6th floor with mediocre environment and service after your one-stop shopping. However, if you go just a few steps further, you will find some pleasant surprises.
Behind Teem Plaza, there are several cafes and shops in the nearby Tianhe Nan community. Xiaoyuan Cafe is Japanese styled. Also good are Moka Cafeand Riluoqiao (Sunsetting Bridge) Cafe I really appreciate the picture in the toilet of Moka Cafe
Also, if you will find shops specialized in English or Indian tea, cups and knitting wares. Life works is where I love to linger over. Earl tea with lemon, raspberry, peppermint, passion fruit and other flavors is my favorite. Actually what impresses me most is an ashtray with Snoopy on it but I did not know anyone I can give it to so I curbed my desire to buy it. However, the second time I went there, the Snoopy was gone!Tears! This is also an antique shop. I bought three caskets here but I loved the package even better. The good news is you can use bank cards here. This is really charming!!!

Haagen Dazs in Guangzhou
PEPPERMINT | Guangzhou | 12/15/2004 12:25:09 PM

You can also taste Haagen Dazs in Taojin Road behind Friendship Shop, opposite to Garden Hotel.
Something interesting you will find this shop is more often than not, a whole family instead of a couple would come in. So dont expect to get lost in the romantic atmosphere. Children crying, parents scolding, grandparents laughing will impress you much more than the taste of the ice cream. Anyway, this is why I love this city soooooooooooooo much! Vigorous and novel, it will forever hold something unexpected.
