Tom,
I read your article on city weekend page. I wonder how you were able to communicate with these Tibetans? Since you asked them an open-ended question, " to which ethnolinguistic category do you belong to?", you must have been able to communicate rather fluently. Do they speak Mandarin (PuTongHua), or are you educated in their native language? From a westerners standpoint, this families spiritual pilgrimage seems to be more of a family ceremony, than a true homage to the gods. If they were praying for health, I am sure that their long, arduous journey completed this task. So, what is it they spend hours upon hours praying for in the Buddhist temples. You did not mention this in your article.
