Hi Griz, I visited Emeishan in summer a couple of years ago and it wasn't too crowded. It isn't always easy to find the route and I did a very long and tiring hike - not the shorter route. I'm pretty fit and used to climbing, and I found it really tough - I did it over 2 days. Few people made it up to Elephant Bathing pool monastery (about 4 in total) when I was there. I then had to get up at a ridiculous time in the morning and try and find my way in the dark to the summit. NOT easy - but great fun!! The steps are a real killer, they are never-ending and a real grind. If you want to do the long treak, I advise you to take your time about it and enjoy the mountain - it's really beautiful. The monkeys are buggers - they'll steal anything - and I met some on the path outside the "normal" area and they were pretty aggressive, so just make sure you keep everything out of sight or they'll be on your back - literally :) Leshan was super busy with tour groups and I had to queue for hours to see it, but it was worth it. My advice is to take something to shield you from the sun, queueing in the burning heat isn't much fun. Enjoy yourself. I loved both of these places.
