Both players have very heavy playing schedules now. Playing doubles together now is simply out of the question. Federer has other things on his mind right now (like breaking Sampras' record).

Perhaps in a few years, when Federer sets his own new record, and things are calmer for him, he may take up Nadal's offer and play doubles just for fun.

Today, no serious top singles player has time for doubles. Only players who aren't making enough money in singles play doubles these days.

You are much more optimistic about Nadal than I am. I believe he will start to fade as a player in a couple of years. The reason is simple. His style of play is far too demanding on his body.
