We recently returned from a 2-week trip to China. It was fantastic. Do not short-change Beijing! There is so much to do and see there - you won't get bored. Be careful about choosing your Tour Guide - make sure it's someone legitimate (especially so-called "students"). If you need a van driver - I know one who is excellent. Very reliable, speaks English, and drives an air-conditioned newer Toyota Van. My sister lives in China and recommended him. He charges $50 for an 8 hour day. We used him several days including, a trip to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs one day. My sister also has a tour-guide she recommends (used when my parents visited last year), but we didn't use him because we were able to do it on-our-own. Aside from shopping, not much else in Hong Kong. Shanghai is also a huge city, more of a commercial/business area - but still with interesting things to do/see, with nice areas only a couple of hours away. But Beijing has more culture and history to offer. You'll have a great time. Good luck.
