I'm an International University student in Korea & have korean room mate and lab mates. I have these experiences with them. Situation 1 : During my first semester after 10 days of being in korea, i'm out of all the money i had & asked my lab leader to give me extra $100 for that month stipend and can cut this amount in the next month.Few minutes later, my female lab mate called me out & said "what kind of money loving woman are you? You are here for Research and not for money, the lab is not willing to pay you".I was stumped at this!! I didn't know anyone in korea at that time except my lab mates & explained my financial situation to the lab captain & this is the reply they gave me. The most disturbing thing is my female lab mate who said all these to me, changed to other lab(Nothing related to her research she has been doing previously)...I asked her what is the reason, she said "The new lab pays her more stipend than our previous lab". (Wow!!! What a "NOT" MONEY LOVING WOMAN). Situation 2 : One of my Korean friend was having TOEFL exam, to help her i borrowed a Practice book from my room mate & gave it to her. After the exam, i took the book back & was on my way to the dorm to give it to my room mate, it rained suddenly & front page of the book got wet, i dried it properly, apologised to her & returned the book. Few days later my room mate sent me message asking me to buy her new book.As the fault was mine i agreed to it & asked her i'll take the old book (I wanted to sell it as second hand) when i give the new one as i didn't have enough money for the complete price of the book. She said I had no authority on the old book & want to keep both of them & abused me " How do you twist your words, You need to take complete responsibility for the book". One thing i need to mention it is TOEFL listening section book, i have given TOEFL exam & know that all the practice for listening section is through audio CD provided. She has the CD with her. Do Koreans lack manners when they speak to others??? or is money the only thing for them??
