While it is a sensitive question, the solution should not be one of national pride but of mutual benefits. The current generation of Chinese people will undoubtedly give a very one sided view against Japan, and in a twisted sense they do very much have the right to do so. The current generation of Japanese people will most likely consider themselves uninformed on this issue and instead, would focus on contemporary Sino-Japanese relationships. (Which includes both good and bad examples such as Eastern Chinese Sea Oil Agreement and Chinese manufactured Gyoza Poisoning). The truth of the matter is, politicians on both sides agree a peaceful Sino Japanese trade relationship will be the most beneficial policy for the region, however, there has not been enough effort made by either side to truly boost either nations' public images pertaining to each other. A quick look over Sino Japanese relationship through out history will tell you that either nation were cultural competitors at best, grudging rivals at worst. The ironic issue is, unlike modern Europe, the general public of Eastern Asia are still too focused on the past than what is at hand, which is American imperialism. But this has to do with cultural misunderstandings. For the specific Sino Japanese example, it is not uncommon for the Chinese to think of Japan as a derivative of Ancient China. Most would point to the Kanji system of the Japanese language as blatant "borrowing" of the Chinese language. However, to do so is unwise. It would be the equivilant of pointing to every latin based language and culture and claim them as derivatives of Rome. It would be a tragedy if more efforts are not made in the future to bolster Sino Japanese relationships and steer toward a more productive direction. But if it does not happen, it would be because hatred and selfishness was placed before forgiveness and collaboration toward a common goal.
