I don't know how much they charge everytime you withdraw money yet, but if I remember well, I was told that there is a 3$ fee each time (half a pound - but I'm from Canada). Before you leave UK, just ask your bank to issue you 2 abnk cards and there will be no need to mention the GF or joint account.

Also, as a safety precaution, you could also bring someone of your familly to the bank and have that person to sign a procuration; I mean that you would give this person the authorization to do transactions on this account while you are away...this could be useful in an emergency situation...

And a credit card in China is not a very useful thing to have as credit here is close to an innexistant thing and I heard that it is not that safe to use such a card anyway; lots of fraud going on.
