Like Guest44223, my question is about having an L visa and needing a Z visa or an RP.
I plan on moving to Turpan in Xinjiang, China to teach English. I believe I can find employment once there[mood1], but am having problems contacting anyone in Turpan[mood4] regarding work and an invitation letter while here in the US. I can't apply for a Z visa without those, so...
What is involved in obtaining a Residence Permit (or a Z Visa I could convert to a RP) from within XUAR (while on a Tourist Visa) once I have an employer lined up? 
Am I correct that the employer needs to file something with a PRC agency and get a Foreign Expert Work License for me? Once that is done, what are the nuts and bolts of getting said Z visa or RP, and renewing it on an annual basis?
I have seen online 'agencies' that provide everything I am asking about, but I am reluctant to use such a service, just as I am reluctant to "just go" and trust that everything will be worked out.
