When you mentioned Qingdao, Weihai and Yantai a new idea popped up! I really like coastal cities even though I am not particularly interested in beaches. ;-) But I do love the ocean. So a completely different route could be Beijing - Tianjin - Yantai - Weihai - Qingdao (which I did visit 20 years ago) - Rizhao - Nanjing area - Shanghai. Always good to have different options.

If we stick  to our first idea it might be something like: Beijing - Xi'an - Nanjing - one of the places between Nanjing and Shanghai - Shanghai. Probably we add one more place, either Pingyao between Beijing and Xi'an or one of Luoyang/Denfeng/Kaifeng between Xi'an and Nanjing.

What about when picking the area to stay in while in Beijing? You mentioned Sanlitun. Seems to be a fun area to stay in. When I pick an area to stay in I think like this: I really don't mind having to walk or use public transport when getting back and forth during daytime. So the place doesn't have to be "centrally located" when it comes to sights. I like to stay in areas where you easily find a lot of eating places and places to have a drink at at night. Really enjoy eating street food and at night markets. I like bars and cafés with a cool and relaxed atmosphere. Hate discos, night clubs and noisy/crowded bars. ;-)
