I have been observing Malaysian book trade which can never be an industry for the past 10 years, and every year Book Development Council with Publishers Association will have Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair that attracts around 2 million visitors.  Many a time, publishers and book distributors instead of introducing new books, are selling old stocks for school children with not so cheap prices.

The National Library of Malaysia tries to boost book production by introducing Writers' Fund where selected writers are given MYR25000 each where they need to submit to the National Library of Malaysia.  But who gets the benefit?  Publishers as these writers need to buy his own books from the publishers at discounted rates.

I often buy books at the airport in China while waiting for my flight.  The books sold are cheaper than purchasing direct from the publishers in Malaysia because in China, producing 20000 copies are normal and nominal.
