Back on 27 July (message #66), I wrote that I'd met my (now) Chinese fiancée through an on-line dating service (eHarmony). It’s been a while since I checked back to see the responses that followed mine, and I thought I’d comment a bit. First, I’m pleased to reveal that our wedding is going to occur in early January of 2010 and we are looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together. My soon-to-be wife certainly doesn’t fit any racial stereotype – she is simply who she is – a beautiful human being - and I am very fortunate to have her in my life. My family is truly in love with her, and I know that the members of her family feel the same way about me. I don’t want to alienate anyone, but, in my opinion, individuals that apply broad assumptions to another human being based on the other person’s race or culture are showing ignorance. We all have blood of the same color and when I last checked the males and females of the various human races are still capable of producing children together. With the exception of a few differences in appearance (which should be appreciated) we are all far more alike than different. Sure, traditional and modern Chinese culture is different in many ways in comparison to traditional and modern Western culture. Indeed, some dimensions of the Chinese culture may seem unusual to Westerners at first glance. But, to those that bash Chinese (or Western) culture, do yourself a HUGE favor… …learn WHY differences exist. Then, consider that an ancient culture (such as the Chinese culture) has had time to mature over thousands of years. Maybe your first thoughts were based on a lack of understanding instead of anything concrete or real. Maybe there is a lot to be learned and appreciated. Is everything about Chinese culture great? Well, let’s be fair here… …is everything about Western culture great? Of course not. But, I feel that you can absorb the best from both cultures and apply them to your life. I have found that assimilating culture like this makes me a far happier and fulfilled person. Hmmm… …for the Chinese guys that look at me like I’m the worst thing in the world when my fiancée and I walk by (or even go as far to say something to me) … …well, it’s time for you guys to get a life. I don’t look differently at an Asian guy walking with a Western woman – I just see two people walking by me. Let’s be mature and respectful. Drop all of the “you stole something of mine” talk. You don’t “steal” a person because you don’t have any claim of ownership over another human being. My fiancée is an independent human being that found her soulmate. We place no weight whatsoever on race. Honestly, I hope that you find the same thing. I am very pleased to be with a woman that has opened my eyes to so many things. She’s intelligent, honest, hard working, open to new ideas and quite beautiful. These are not racial “traits” or stereotypes - they are the mark of a wonderful human being.
