Rose, especially the red rose is the lovers’ favorite. But do you know the origin and legend of the rose? Roman legend: During the Roman Empire period, there was a beautiful lady whose name was Rhodanthe. Since she was too beautiful, there were many suitors who were attracted and started to pursue her. In order to avoid those troublesome suitors, she hid in her friend Diana’s temple. After Rhodanthe told her why she came to her temple, Diana became jealous of Rhodanthe’s beauty. One day, those suitors got to know that Rhodanthe stayed at Diana’s temple and they decided to find Rhodanthe. When they broke into the temple to see Rhodanthe, Diana was irritated. Then she turned Rhodanthe into a rose and her suitors into the thorns. Greek legend: The Greek legend tells that the rose was created by the Goddess of flowers, Chloris. One day, Chloris found a lifeless seed of a nymph in the forest. To make the seed alive, she begged Aphrodite and other Gods for help. Aphrodite, the Goddess of love, gave the beauty to the seed. Dionysus, the God of wine, added nectar to the seed. The Three Graces gave her charm, brightness and joy. Then Zephyr, the West Wind, blew away the clouds so that Apollo, the sun god, could shine and made this flower bloom. And so the Rose was born and was immediately crowned the Queen of Flowers. Really amazing, isn’t it? Later on, young lovers resort to red roses to show their love to their beloved. It is said that there has been a special rose language created as a communication method for the lovers to express their love toward their beloved. Do you know it? Hint: In the mid 18th century, a British ambassador’s wife once wrote it in her letters.
