Thread: Using trains to these places in China

Looking at seat61 and lonely planet some train journeys look straight forward ie. the shanghai to Beijing ---> Beijing to Xian ---> Xian to Chengdu using (direct 'z' trains hard/soft sleepers)

Then onwards from there trains don't seem to be direct, how would we get from Chengdu to Yangshuo? Then onwards to Hong Kong?

This is obviously our first time around China and we don't speak Chinese and some people say its the hardest place to get a grips with, so our thoughts we whether to do an organized tour? Do you think this is a good idea or should traveling independently be fine?
