I think once you know  the situations of professional guides who work for a travel company in China, you will make your trip easier.

When the travel company charges you, they probably tell a price with tips included. But when it goes to the guides, it will be no tips. So the payment is very low to the guides. But when some extra sightseeings ot shops are added, the tour guides will get a commission. That will be a lot of money. This sutiation makes, or I should say kind of forces, most of the guides try to persuade you to go to where they can get the commission and not pay attention to the service they provide.

But there are guides for no-extra shopping or sightseeings. The payment will be higher than the normal one, but part of the guides who provide this kind of service will take care of you and stand for you benifit. If not, you can just tell them directly, no shopping, no extra sightseeing...

I've been an English guide and interpreter for more than two years without any travel company. Well... I work for companies like China International Travel Service only if there are some important guests such as the guests from the cruises of American Carnival. Everytime I tell my guests that some shops sell fake things or things are not worth to buy. Even if sometimes the guests get things, they always tell me as soon as they get them. If it's fake or not worth, I'll just tell them and it's not too late to get the money back. But when you complain it here, it is impossible to be sovled.

I hope that the service of Chinese tour guides are good and I always try to offer the top service, or at least try to be near to the top since my guests are nice. And I wish that you could be able to tell your complains to the tour guides directly before it's too late.

If you want good guide service, you can either go and find a good company in China, or find a personal guide for you whom you could tell the does and donts to.
