As President Hu has stated on several occasions, China is seeking a peaceful development. The US politicians are so anxious perhaps be3cause they still adopt the old mindset that the relation between the two countries is either confrontation or alliance. Since China has always abided by a peaceful foreign policy of independence and is unwilling to be in alliance with US, so US views China as its rivalry. In addition, after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, China has become the only country who has the power to confront with US. Why? In the post-Cold War, the international situation experienced a dramatic change: Russia declines, China rises,US still maintians its status of world leader. In Western Europe, UK, France and Germany are allies of America. By the way, the three countries don't have the power to challlenge US global status. In Pacific Asia, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan all follow US steps. Japan is an economical power, but militarily, it is still a dwarf. So, US no need to worry. US, perhaps, have learned a lesson from the two World Wars and reached the conclusion that traditionally, when a new power rises, it will surely disturb the balance of power and poses a threat to the old power. Germany's rise interruptd the balance of power, and led to the bloody two world wars. Personally, I believe US' ways of thinking is a littlte bit outdated. This wolrd is quite different now. All the countries have to learn to coexist with others. Global problems emerged in a large amount. No single country can handle these global problems very effectively on his own. Anti-terrorism, anti-SARS, anti-Birds Flu, and combating against international human trafficking and drug dealing, even containing the Green house emission., all these global problems need the support and coordination of other countries. Furthermore, US may have overlooked the immense power of nuclear weapons. The deterrence of nuclear weapons make any nuclear power have to think carefully before launching a massive attack against others. So, a large-scale war between US and China is almost impossible, but the countinous trivial frictions will be inevitable and long-lasting, since two countries have different national interests. As two great powers, US and China plays a significant role in international community. Therefore, Sino-US relation will have a big impact on the development and change of international situation in the next half century. How to handle biliateral ties needs political wisdom.
