I know most of these posts are really old now, but here are my top tips for Macau, or Things I Wish My Guide Book Had Told Me: When you get off the ferry, head straight outside and you'll find a line of free buses taking tourists to the big casino hotels. Just get on any one that takes your fancy and save yourself a walk. They'll take you up to where the hotels in the new/casino district are. The casino hotels are very, very expensive to stay in. Actually, most of the hotels are very expensive. So look around for a little travel agent offering discount rooms. There are lots of these tiny offices dotted around, with posters in the window advertising rooms in the big hotels. You can save 60% of the cost of a room by doing this. You need to pay cash up front and will have to pay a damage deposit, but you can stay in pretty much any one of the big hotels there for a fraction of the walk-up rate. When I went there was an immense queue for immigration at the ferry terminal. There were about twenty passport desks open, and at least three full ferry loads of people waiting to get through. It took about an hour, so bear this in mind. And finally, the customs restrictions for HK are quite strict- only 60 cigarettes- so don't be tempted to take advantage of the cheap cartons available in Macau unless you're going to smoke them all before you get back on the ferry.
