Griz 326, "ignorance is women's virtue", Originally, this old saying means that it is better for women to receive little education and have a little knowledge. In the feudal China, the male dominated almost every parts of social life. The advocacy of this idea by the male dominator was to maintain the patriarchical system, in which the male was in a dominant position. This old doctrine was also reflected in another feudal Chinese doctrine" wives are subject to their husbands" which is part of confucianism. In the past, these old doctrines trapped women deeply, and put women in a vulnerable position. "Only an ignorant man would think that a woman is dumb. Even uneducated women are very clever". As to this point, I do favor Erencius' opinion that "it depends on individuals". You probably make a generalization or an overstatement. "Even uneducated women are very clever." Well, this is a reallly arguable question. Here, I don't want to divert too much from the topic. Quote: I think this reaction for men is partly natural and partly social (we can discuss about it). In the nature, except very few species, males have to be superior to females, it is the principle of domination which implies kind of obedience. Males usually create and fight for the territory they built, females are living on it (this is true for many animals, carnivores and herbivores). If the male is defeated, females will follow the winning male. Erencius, I can not deny the fact that men are born to be physically stronger than women. Well, it might be a little biased to say that "males have to be superior to females, it is the principle of domination which implies kind of obedience." The domination of male was not ruled since the dawn of human civilization. I 'd rather interprete this dominance of male from the perspective of economic development or the evolution of human society. As you know, in the far primitive society, namely matriarchal society, it was women who dominated the society. In the primitive era, women's leading status was determined by the low-productivitiy economy. The main economic output was the leaves and fruits of the trees in the wild. Gathering wild fruits and leaves is the main economic activity. Women worked more fruitfully in such kinds of economic activity because they have more flexible fingers than men. Women played a very important role in supplying family. The important economic role of women in society led to their dominant role in the whole society. During the transition from the "plants-gathering economy" to "hunting eoconomy", men's physical strength became prominent and advantageous. Gradually, the male played a dominant role in economic activity. Matriarchal system was replaced by the patriarchical society.( Erencius, I hope that your question have been adresssed.)
