I don't think it is possible for any English person (Gentleman or not) to avoid saying "please", "thank you", and "sorry" at every available opportunity. It is in our blood! Most British people are very considerate too (there are exceptions!), so playing MP3 loudly, or talking loudly on the phone in a public environment is something most of us would not do. If someone calls me when I am on a train, I will answer and tell them I am on a train, and that I will call them back when it is more convenient to talk, rather than sit there and annoy everyone around me. I always hold doors open for people behind me, it is something I do without even thinking, but very seldom do people in China thank me for doing so, or even acknowledge that I did it at all. I'll still continue to do it however, because I am British, and that is what I am supposed to do! The problem the British have is that they are probably the most considerate and polite culture on the planet, so when they go to other places, it appears that everyone is rude. It is more just a case of recalibrating what should be considered rude. However, I do think that spitting in the street (or anywhere except one's own home) should be considered bad manners, not to mention unhygienic. I think the British gentleman is still alive and well. Don't believe the western media - they are full of shit!
