For the most part, I like reading the comments of others on news stories. It gives you a general sense of what people are thinking on various issues. Sort of like taking a social pulse. Sure there are nut cases posting all the time and people expressing deviant opinions, but that's reality, a slice of society. I haven't posted any comments yet because I can't be bothered to log in, but I have clicked on the 'recommend' button of many comments that I'm in agreement with (this feature also gives readers feedback on what people are thinking). Today however I was dismayed to learn that the CBC's censorship role in these comments goes beyond just removing obscenities. The top news story today was on the Burma storm disaster. One person's comment on the story was removed, however many people read it before the CBC took action. The people referred to the poster's comment in their own comments. The person had made an anti-social comment about the disaster. Something to the effect that Canadian relief shouldn't be wasted on this disaster. That the money would be better spent on the needy in Canada. Although I strongly disagree with this person's comment, I don't feel the CBC should censor this type of post.
